How do injectable neurotoxins work?
Every time you make a facial expression - a smile, a frown, a yawn, looking surprised - the muscles beneath your skin contract. Some contractions are important, like the ones that pull the corners of your mouth up to make a smile. But other, smaller contractions can cause wrinkles and lines to form, and over time, those wrinkles and lines can become permanent features as well. The injected neurotoxin works by preventing nerve signals from reaching the affected muscles, which means they're unable to contract. While you'll still be able to make normal expressions, the lines and wrinkles that appear as a result of repetitive expressions won't be able to form.
Who is a candidate for this procedures?
Botox® can be an ideal option for both men and women who are beginning to experience the early signs of aging as well as for older patients. The treatment is most commonly used on frown lines, forehead lines, and crow's feet - those crinkly lines that appear at the sides of the eyes.
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding as well as patients with neurological disorders should not have Botox® treatment. However, like any other type of medical treatment, you should not consider injectables without first consulting with your doctor or dermatologist.
What does a treatment plan include?
Treatment using the popular neurotoxin takes just a few minutes and involves injections with a very fine needle. The injection area is cleaned prior to treatment, and most patients experience only slight discomfort. There may also be minor swelling and bruising at the injection sites which will dissipate soon after treatment. It may take a few days to a week for treatments to take full effect. Follow your doctor's recommendations; in most cases, you'll be told to avoid alcohol, aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen for a week or two prior to treatment to reduce the risk of bruising.
What are the advantages in choosing an injectable?
Injectables can help men and women achieve a younger, more relaxed and refreshed appearance by temporarily relaxing lines and wrinkles that can make a person look older than they feel. Typically, treatments will:
- Reduce the appearance of crow's feet
- Reduce the appearance of forehead lines
- Reduce the appearance of frown lines
Many patients choose Botox® in conjunction with other treatments such as dermal fillers to achieve many of the same results of a facelift but without the cost or need for invasive cosmetic surgery.
Will I need follow-up treatments?
Botox® is not a permanent solution, and over time, its effects will diminish. In most cases, the effects of treatment last about four to six months, and lines and wrinkles will reappear as the muscles become reactivated. Many patients find that when they receive multiple treatments that over time the lines and wrinkles become less noticeable as underlying muscles become "trained to relax."
