Three Ways to Get Sensational Skin This Spring

Woman in white sundress on beach

Spring is officially here. As the temperatures continue to rise, it’s likely your calendar is filling up with fun-in-the-sun events such as days at the shore with friends, browsing the boardwalk shops and attending springtime outdoor weddings. Make sure you’re ready with smooth, healthy and glowing skin. Here’s how…

  1. Get a chemical peel: This noninvasive treatment goes back to ancient times and remains one of the most effective and popular options for smoothing wrinkles; reducing the appearance of acne scars, sun spots and age spots; and improving the skin’s overall texture and appearance.
  2. Undergo laser hair removal: Those short, strappy, skin-baring sundresses are the perfect look for sultry, sunny days. Laser hair removal assures your legs and underarms are smooth and hair-free. And because effects can become permanent after a series of treatments, you’ll get to spend less time primping and more time enjoying all fun the spring and summer seasons have to offer.
  3. Consider sclerotherapy: One factor that can mar the look of your legs is the development of spider veins and varicose veins. Don’t let them cause you to forego swimsuits, shorts and sundresses out of embarrassment over the look of your legs. Sclerotherapy can help to eliminate unsightly spider and varicose veins and minimize the pain and discomfort associated with them.

Top Causes of Too Much Hair

Beautiful dark-haired woman

A gorgeous head of hair has been called a woman’s crowning glory. But when it comes to facial hair, it’s a whole different story. In normal cases, women have only fine hair (sometimes referred to as “peach fuzz”) above the lips and on the chin, chest, abdomen and back. But when that hair turns dark, coarse and, dare we say, “man-like” you may be experiencing a condition called hirsutism.

Common causes of hirsutism may include:

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome: A common condition caused by an imbalance of sex hormones. Other symptoms include irregular periods, obesity, infertility and ovarian cysts.
  • Cushing’s syndrome: This can happen when your body is exposed to high levels of the hormone cortisol, often caused by the adrenal glands producing too much cortisol or by taking medications such as prednisone over a long period of time.
  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia: It’s an inherited condition marked by overworking adrenal glands pumping out an abnormal amount of steroid hormones, including cortisol and androgen.
  • Hyperthecosis: A condition that involves the ovaries producing too much male hormone.
  • Certain medications: If you’re taking testosterone, danazol, anabolic steroids, glucocorticoids, cyclosporine, minoxidil or phenytoin, this may be to blame.
  • Tumors: In rare conditions, an androgen-secreting tumor in the ovaries or adrenal glands can cause hirsutism.
  • Medications: Some medications can cause hirsutism. One such drug is danazol, which is used to treat women with endometriosis.
  • Genetics: Unfortunately, it’s sometimes simply a family thing. Women of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and South Asian ancestry are at particular risk for inherited hirsutism.

Summer is Near – Get Lovely Legs for Swimsuit Season

Beautiful woman's legs on the beach

It’s springtime in New Jersey. Temperatures are beginning to rise and summer will be here before you know it. Make sure your gorgeous gams are ready for days spent poolside or at the shore with laser hair removal by Metropolitan Dermatology. Here are a few tips to help you prepare.

Choose doctor who is board certified in a specialty such as dermatology or cosmetic surgery and has experience with laser hair removal. If a physician’s assistant or licensed nurse will perform the procedure, make sure a doctor supervises and is available on-site throughout the treatment.

Before scheduling your procedure, schedule a consultation with your doctor or aesthetician to go over all pertinent details, including your medical history and all risks, benefits, costs and expectations.

In the six weeks to two months prior to your procedure, stay out of the sun. This helps to reduce the risk of side effects including inadvertent skin lightening. If you have a tan already, wait until it fades before making your appointment. During this time, also avoid plucking, waxing or electrolysis – all of which can disturb the hair follicle and interfere with laser hair removal.

The day before your procedure, shave with a new, clean razor. This will help allow the laser to better target the hair follicles and ensure that there is no lingering bacteria that could cause contact dermatitis (a delayed allergic reaction) after your laser treatment. Also, avoid caffeine for 24 hours to help you feel more relaxed and to minimize pain.

Get your legs bikini- and sundress-ready with a call to Metropolitan Dermatology in Clark at 732-574-1399, in Kearny at 201-997-8008 or in Teaneck at 201-837-3939.

Why More Men are Choosing Cosmetic Procedures

Men increasingly are opting for the same cosmetic procedures that women have loved for years.

Men increasingly are opting for the same cosmetic procedures that women have loved for years.

Cosmetic procedures have long been considered a woman’s thing. Not anymore. Today, men increasingly are opting for many of the same aesthetic and youth-preserving procedures that women undergo every day. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, statistics show that men account for eight percent of the non-invasive and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures performed in 2013.

Here are the top aesthetic procedures that men are choosing more and more frequently:

  1. Botox – 385,358 procedures
  2. Laser hair removal – 190,546 procedures
  3. Microdermabrasion – 178,410 procedures
  4. Dermal fillers – 95,361 procedures
  5. Chemical peel – 94,625 procedures

So what’s pushing this male-centric trend? A top factor is recent economic troubles that have made competition for good jobs tougher. Mature men often feel they’re at a disadvantage when competing for positions and promotions against much younger candidates, particularly as older workers increasingly are delaying retirement. Cosmetic procedures that effectively shave years off a man’s looks their looks can help level the playing field.

Plus, today’s Americans are far more health conscious and physically active than in generations before. Not only are we living longer, but many men and women feel far younger than their actual ages. Cosmetic procedures like those listed above can help close the gap between the age a man is and the age he feels. Finally, changing attitudes have made undergoing cosmetic surgery and aesthetic procedures far more socially acceptable for men today than in the past.
