10 Tips for Preventing Nail Fungus

Beautiful fingernails

Beautiful, strong nails are as coveted as the latest high-end fashionable accessory. But their look can be wrecked by a fungal infection. A case of nail fungus happens when a fungus such as yeast begins growing beneath the surface of a fingernail or toenail. While the condition is more frequent among those with nail diseases or immune system deficiencies, they also can strike via something as simple as a minor injury or exposure to fungus lingering in a nail salon, swimming pool or gym.

Signs can include dull, yellow-streaked, thickened and brittle nails, as well as visible material trapped beneath the nailbed. Metropolitan Dermatology offers 10 top ways to prevent nail fungus:

  1. Wash your hands and feet regularly and keep your nails short and dry.
  2. Wear sweat-absorbing socks made of fabrics like wool, nylon and polypropylene.
  3. Choose shoes that reduce humidity. Rock a pair of open-toed pumps or cute sandals
  4. Discard old shoes, as they can harbor fungi. It’s a legitimate health-based reason to go shoe shopping.
  5. Use an antifungal spray or powder on your feet and the insides of your shoes to keep them fungi-free.
  6. Wear rubber gloves when doing dishes, washing your car, cleaning an aquarium or any other activity that involves prolonged exposure to water. Turn the gloves inside out to dry between uses.
  7. Avoid over-trimming or picking at the skin around your nails, as this can give germs access to your skin and nails.
  8. Don’t go barefoot in public places, particularly in wet areas like pools, showers and locker rooms.
  9. Choose a reputable nail salon and make sure that nail techs sterilize manicure and pedicure instruments after every use.
  10. Avoid or limit nail polish and artificial nails, especially if you suspect you have an active case of nail fungus. Attempting to hide unsightly symptoms with a coat of candy apple red, it can trap unwanted moisture and worsen the infection.

If you spot signs of a nail fungus, Metropolitan Dermatology can effectively diagnose and treat it. Visit us online to schedule a consultation at our Clark, Kearny, Teaneck or Staten Island location.

Beauty is the Ultimate Valentine’s Day Gift

Beautiful woman opening Valentine's Day gift

As far back as the Middle Ages, Valentines’ Day was a celebration of courtly love and beauty. Today, it’s no different. So why not celebrate your own beauty with a little pampering from New Jersey’s Metropolitan Dermatology? We’ve got three top choices:

  • Botox: In 2013, Botox was administered some 6.3 million times to patients nationwide – and with good reason. It’s among the most trusted and highly effective options for smoothing wrinkles and plumping skin. In minutes, this purified protein begins to relax overactive facial muscles that result in frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. You’ll see a smoother, tighter, more youthful look that lasts up to six months.
  • Chemical Peel: Effective on the face, neck, décolleté and hands, chemical peels work by sloughing off the upper layers of skin to reveal newer skin with a softer, smoother and more uniform texture. Your skin is literally polished to a tighter, brighter, move vibrant look.
  • IPL Photofacial: Harnessing the power of light, IPL photofacial treatments use highly-focused beams of broad-spectrum light to zap and remove damaged skin, generating new collagen growth. This collagen boost helps to make the skin look and feel firmer, tighter and more resilient. You’ll enjoy improved skin texture, more even skin tone, minimized pore size and reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Treat yourself this Valentine’s Day. Call to schedule your appointment in Clark (732-574-1399), Kearny (201-997-8008) or Teaneck (201-837-3939).

Four Primary Causes of Acne

Some 20 percent of American adults have active acne. Metropolitan Dermatology can help.

Some 20 percent of American adults have active acne. Metropolitan Dermatology can help.

Many an adult has been surprised to find that acne – considered a scourge of the teenage years – doesn’t end with high school. In fact, some 20 percent of all American adults have active acne. To help keep your skin beautiful and blemish-free, it’s important to know the four main causes of acne.

Top factors in developing acne are:

  • Oil production
  • Dead skin cells
  • Clogged pores
  • Bacteria

Acne most commonly appears on your face, neck, chest back and shoulders, the areas of skin with the most sebaceous glands, also known as oil glands. Your hair follicles are connected to your oil glands, which secrete sebum to lubricate hair and skin. This oily substance typically travels along the hair shaft and through the openings of the hair follicles onto the skin’s surface.

But when your body’s production of sebum and dead skin cells increases, the two can build up inside the hair follicles. This creates an environment primed for bacteria and the result is any of several types of acne. Whiteheads form when the plugged pore causes the hair follicle wall to bulge. And if the plug opens to the surface and darkens, you’ve got a blackhead. Certain factors can trigger acne or worsen existing acne, including hormones, certain medications, carb-heavy diets, poor hygiene and stress.

If you’re suffering with acne or acne scars, Metropolitan Dermatology can help with customized treatments that may include medication, chemical peels or IPL Photofacials. Contact us in Clark at 732-574-1399; Kearny at 201-997-8008; or Teaneck at 201-837-3939.

Take the Scary out of Halloween Makeup

Going all out for Halloween? Make sure you choose safe makeup products and remove your costume makeup before heading to bed.

Going all out for Halloween? Make sure you choose safe makeup products and remove your costume makeup before heading to bed.

Halloween isn’t just for the little tykes. Many adults look forward to dressing up in spooky costumes and partying the night away. Often, those costumes involve elaborate makeup – and that’s where the holiday can get very scary.

Many Halloween makeup products contain ingredients that can irritate your skin, or even cause severe allergic reactions. Metropolitan Dermatology offer these tips for rocking that frightfully chic disguise without leaving your skin victim to its own horror story…

  1. Know the culprits: The leading causes of makeup-caused skin irritation are fragrances, preservatives and pigments, especially red dyes. Look for these in the ingredients list on makeup packaging and skip them. Also, check the FDA’s list of approved color additives. If your makeup includes an additive not listed, choose another. Generally speaking, the fewer chemical ingredients a makeup contains, the easier it will be on your skin.
  2. Check the for expiration dates: Most Halloween and costuming makeups contain ingredients designed to prevent bacteria growth and allow for a longer shelf life. Unfortunately, as these makeups approach the end of their safe shelf lives, these ingredients begin to degrade, losing their protective abilities. Keep in mind that many unsold Halloween makeup products go back to warehouses, where they’re stored for the next season, and that improper storage also can reduce the effectiveness of protective ingredients. Choose makeups with far-off expiration dates and toss them after the Halloween season is done. Don’t save them for next year.
  3. Use a primer: Before applying your costume makeup, use a high quality cosmetic primer. This gives you a protective barrier between your skin and your makeup. Plus, it helps assure your look lasts throughout the evening.
  4. Test first: Test any new makeup on a small patch of your skin before a full application. Wait a few moments to make sure your skin won’t negatively react. Watch for irritation or allergy symptoms like redness, itching, burning or stinging. If your skin begins to swell or blister, remove the makeup immediately and seek medical treatment.
  5. Cleanse: After the celebration and before heading to bed, completely remove all makeup, cleanse and moisturize your skin.

Because Halloween is just one night, it’s tempting to choose cheaper makeup products. But remember that your skin’s health is priceless. That’s why skincare experts recommend spending a few more dollars and opting for high quality theatre makeup instead.

From all of us here at Metropolitan Dermatology, have a fun and safe Halloween.
