Top Trigger Factors for Rosacea

Knowing your unique triggers can help reduce your Rosacea flare-ups.

Knowing your unique triggers can help reduce your Rosacea flare-ups.

A rosy complexion is a sign of good health. But a blotchy, red look that often comes with itching or stinging is an entirely different matter. It’s called Rosacea and it’s a condition that causes certain facial blood vessels to enlarge, wreaking havoc on your complexion. Your skin may appear flushed and swollen with visible spider veins, and feel dry, rough or scaly.

While there’s no definitive cause, there are multiple known triggers. Here are a few of the most common, according to a recent survey conducted by the National Rosacea Society:

  • Drinking alcohol
  • Spicy foods
  • Food and drinks that are hot in temperature
  • Exercise or heavy exertion, particularly during extremely hot or cold, humid or windy weather
  • Hot baths or saunas
  • Sun exposure
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Sudden change in emotion, such as embarrassment or sudden laughter
  • Menopause
  • Chronic cough
  • Caffeine withdrawal syndrome
  • Products with ingredients that can dry out your skin, like alcohol, Propylene glycol or artificial fragrances
  • Certain medications including topical steroids, blood pressure drugs and opiate painkillers
  • Allergic reactions

Have you suffered signs of Rosacea? Researchers conducting the study found that 96 percent of the 1,221 Rosacea-diagnosed patients surveyed were able to significantly reduce the number of flare-ups they suffered one they had successfully identified their unique triggers. Metropolitan Dermatology can help you identify the triggers that provoke your Rosacea and develop a customized treatment plan to manage symptoms.
