Varicose Vein Sclerotherapy in Clark, Kearny, Teaneck, Jersey City, West New York, New Jersey, and Staten Island New York.

A varicose vein is a vein that has become enlarged. This can occur anywhere on the body and often get worse with age. Spider veins are similar but are smaller and closer to the surface of the skin. Because of their appearance, people may find either to be an embarrassing skin condition. For most people, these veins are painless. However, some men and women may experience pain and discomfort from enlarged veins. This condition is typically caused by poor circulation and/or weak vein walls. Fortunately, sclerotherapy can be effectively used to treat both varicose and spider veins.

How does sclerotherapy work?

Sclerotherapy eliminates damaged veins by infiltrating the veins with saline solution. When the solution comes into contact with the walls of the vein, it irritates them. This causes the vessel's walls to swell. It also causes blood in the vein to clot. Eventually, the vein will no longer be visible from the surface of the skin. This treatment procedure is the gold-standard method in removing spider veins of the legs.

Who is a good candidate for varicose or spider vein treatments?

You may be a candidate for varicose or spider vein sclerotherapy if you have veins that are causing you pain or discomfort. You may also be a viable candidate for this procedure if you are embarrassed by the appearance of painless varicose or spider veins at revealing locations on your body. This approach is best for treating small-to-medium sized veins and is not typically recommended for the treatment of larger veins. You may not be a good candidate for this procedure if you have any history of blood clots.

What's involved with this procedure?

During sclerotherapy, we will begin by sterilizing the area to be treated. Our dermatologist will then inject saline solution into your varicose veins using a small needle. In most cases, these injections are relatively painless. Multiple injections will likely be required. Throughout the procedure, the doctor will monitor the effects of the solution on each vein. Although you may not feel any pain from the needle itself, the material injected may cause a slight burning sensation.

What are the advantages of sclerotherapy?

Advantages of this procedure for treating annoying veins are as follows:

  • Elimination of unsightly veins
  • Reduction of pain associated with enlarged veins
  • Procedure is mildly invasive
  • Can be performed in your doctor's office
  • No anesthesia is required
  • Very little pain is involved
  • Side effects are minimal and resolve quickly
  • You can go home immediately after the procedure
  • Procedure can be used on the face or hands

Will I need follow-up treatments?

In some cases, a single procedure may be sufficient to treat your problems. However, if your condition is more severe, or if you are not satisfied with the results of your initial treatment, additional treatments can be performed. You may also need additional treatments if you develop additional enlarged veins in the future. In some cases, varicose veins may be a symptom of a more serious medical condition that may require a different treatment protocol. If you're living with painful varicose veins or are embrassed by unsightly spider veins, contact the Metropolitan Dermatology office nearest you for a consultation. Our doctor can best advise you on which cosmetic or medical approach is preferred.
