Are your crow's feet and forehead lines making you look older than you feel? Then Botox® injections could be a great choice for you. It is one of the most popular and most trusted cosmetic procedures performed today for treating these and other fine lines and wrinkles.
Having more than 10 years of experience in Botox® and injectable cosmetic fillers, Metropolitan Dermatology is one of the leading providers of cosmetic services in the New York/New Jersey metro area, pioneering many advanced aesthetic techniques.
How do injectable neurotoxins work?
Every time you make a facial expression - a smile, a frown, a yawn, looking surprised - the muscles beneath your skin contract. Some contractions are important, like the ones that pull the corners of your mouth up to make a smile. But other, smaller contractions can cause wrinkles and lines to form, and over time, those wrinkles and lines can become permanent features as well. The injected neurotoxin works by preventing nerve signals from reaching the affected muscles, which means they're unable to contract. While you'll still be able to make normal expressions, the lines and wrinkles that appear as a result of repetitive expressions won't be able to form.
Who is a candidate for this procedures?
Botox® can be an ideal option for both men and women who are beginning to experience the early signs of aging as well as for older patients. The treatment is most commonly used on frown lines, forehead lines, and crow's feet - those crinkly lines that appear at the sides of the eyes.
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding as well as patients with neurological disorders should not have Botox® treatment. However, like any other type of medical treatment, you should not consider injectables without first consulting with your doctor or dermatologist.
What does a treatment plan include?
Treatment using the popular neurotoxin takes just a few minutes and involves injections with a very fine needle. The injection area is cleaned prior to treatment, and most patients experience only slight discomfort. There may also be minor swelling and bruising at the injection sites which will dissipate soon after treatment. It may take a few days to a week for treatments to take full effect. Follow your doctor's recommendations; in most cases, you'll be told to avoid alcohol, aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen for a week or two prior to treatment to reduce the risk of bruising.
What are the advantages in choosing an injectable?
Injectables can help men and women achieve a younger, more relaxed and refreshed appearance by temporarily relaxing lines and wrinkles that can make a person look older than they feel. Typically, treatments will:
- Reduce the appearance of crow's feet
- Reduce the appearance of forehead lines
- Reduce the appearance of frown lines
Many patients choose Botox® in conjunction with other treatments such as dermal fillers to achieve many of the same results of a facelift but without the cost or need for invasive cosmetic surgery.
Will I need follow-up treatments?
Botox® is not a permanent solution, and over time, its effects will diminish. In most cases, the effects of treatment last about four to six months, and lines and wrinkles will reappear as the muscles become reactivated. Many patients find that when they receive multiple treatments that over time the lines and wrinkles become less noticeable as underlying muscles become "trained to relax." We all respond differently to the aging process, but our individual muscle structures beneath the skin will often dictate the pattern and location in which wrinkles form. Like any part of the body, the skin weakens with time and use, which is why many people notice the skin around the face begin to thin and bend to facial expressions more and more as time passes. The skin becomes weak, thinner, and less likely to be as elastic as it once was in our younger years, even though the muscle tissues beneath continue to receive nerve impulses from the brain as they expand and contract just below the skin. The more rigid, dehydrated and weak the skin becomes, the more likely we are to form distinct patterns of facial lines. In this particular case, our focus is on frown lines, or what we call “elevens,” in the cosmetic industry.
Many of the patients we see at Metropolitan Dermatology in New York and New Jersey say they often feel these forehead lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows give their age away. Looking tired, sad, irritated, or overwhelmed throughout the day isn’t fun for anyone, and these lines tend to give off false impressions that don’t accurately reflect our mood. Not only do most patients find that these wrinkles make them feel as if they don’t look like themselves or project an accurate first impression, but looking in the mirror and seeing these changes in the skin can affect their confidence as well.
Dysport Is a Pure Neurotoxin for Frown Lines
At Metropolitan Dermatology we provide our patients with the best and safest options for dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections. Dysport is that next level option for those patients that don’t want to overdo it with more intensive neurotoxin injectables that can sometimes cause a “frozen” look, depending on the chemical composition of the product and the reaction of their skin. For our patients that are curious about the use of injectables to help slow the aging process and smooth over moderate to severe wrinkles in the forehead and between the eyebrows, Dysport is one of the best options. Because Dysport is considered to be a stripped down version of incobotulinum toxin A, patients find that the reaction to and results of this type of injectable appear more natural and are easier on the face. Previously, patients that have tried Botox or Dysport may have found they didn’t take well to these formulas, and wanted a softer looking option to focus on the same treatment areas.
Dysport injections only take 10-20 minutes each session, and are relatively painless, so there’s no need for anesthetic. In just a few days following the injection along the glabellar lines and between the eyebrows, patients will notice these lines begin to soften. Over the next three to four months, wrinkles appear smooth and calm without overactive muscle activity. Give these muscles a break and schedule a consultation for Dysport by calling one of our four convenient office locations listed here.
